How in the world can you leave out Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity? I think that would make a push for your #5.
You know, I recognize I’m in the minority on this, but I never could connect with High Fidelity. It seems like the quintessential movie for music fans, so I know I SHOULD love it — but it felt very … forced … to me. Maybe that’s because I didn’t see it until about 5 years after it came out, so a lot of the music references already felt dated to me.
I initially read the novel and got hooked. There were parts of the film that did seem forced, but it simply resonates with me. There are parts of the staging that I love…like the opening lines
“What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”
Additionally, I think that one could make an argument for Garden State. Zach Braff’s track selection accompanies each scene perfectly.
I actually thought of Garden State, but it’s not really “about” music so much as it just makes great use of it.
Don’t get me wrong, I think High Fidelity is a decent movie. I just don’t rave about it the way a lot of people seem to. (Incidentally, I’ve noticed that the people most passionate about it also happened to have read the book first, so maybe that tainted their impressions of the movie — maybe it’s the book that deserves all the praise.)
I will give you that one. I think a more compelling list would be Film Soundtracks that are Essential to the movie.
